A theatrical, off the wall, pop-up display was designed to fill the window of the Future Shelter store for the recent Angove Street Festival.

The incentive behind the thematic, temporary display was to unveil the State’s social heritage in a thought provoking manner that would stimulate and captivate the public. Amazingly when we approached Future Shelter about a possible display for the festival they were about to ask us a similar favour. The local history and stories was the inspiration for an illustrated book they are working on and combined with our idea of using museum collections in the display, the whole concept came to life.

With the council of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society on board, we delved into the collection and let our creative minds run free. As Angove Street has become quite the Café strip a focus towards tea, coffee and kitchen paraphernalia developed. By having the opportunity to work with some of the wondrous collection from the Royal Western Australian Historical Society, we found a collaborative and visual way of bringing the stories and local history to life, outside the usual museum environment.

We were recently invited to submit a concept for a new Visitors and Interpretive Centre in Balranald, NSW. In collaboration with Paradigm Architects and Savagely Creative we submitted an alternative design that encompasses the site as a whole, linking the current buildings that already form part of the Heritage Precinct with a new Visitors Centre, Interpretive Pavilion and Cafe.

The brief was quite succinct. The community made it very clear that they wanted to build a Centre that would make them proud, but will be economically viable and easy to operate. The building design should reflect the local history, environment and industry and the project goal is to be a successful case study of sustainable tourism development and best practice in community participation. There was also a desire for the interpretation to be as important as the building design and to tell the story of Balranald in an interactive and engaging manner.

We were thrilled to hear the news that we were the successful team and now we’re busy planning for our first site visit! We’ll keep you posted on how the designs are progressing.

Thanks to Fiona at Paradigm Architects and Claire from Savagely Creative for being part of our team.

Along the tourist attraction known as Tin Horse Highway, in the wheatbelt town of Kulin, there will soon be a new sculpture to add to the collection.

We have been involved in designing a ‘Thorpedo’ style tin horse sculpture to mark the entrance of the new public aquatic centre.

This fun project was in addition to the entry statement designs we are currently developing. The Shire’s Mechanic, Denis Brandis was brought into the project with the challenge of using local recycled materials to construct the tin horse. He has steamed ahead and almost completed the sculpture but luckily Gen Farrelly, Senior Project Officer with the Shire of Kulin, caught him just in time to get some progress shots to us.

We’ll update you with the final installation when Thorpedo is all painted up so you can plan your road trip…

This Discovery Centre has been designed as an innovative approach to interpretive spaces for children. Situated on the Victoria Quay in Fremantle, the B Shed is a heritage-listed building, recently the recipient of conservation works.

The theme is the Working Port and interprets how Fremantle Ports operate in a colourful, interactive and sensory experience. The spatial flow of the centre was based along the historical timeline of Fremantle Port.

A dramatic, stylised environment ignites the imagination and showcases the development and workings of the Port. Built-up, textured landscape areas, a ship wreck, container stacks, gantry and littlies areas are interspersed with hand drawn, illustrated characters to create a friendly learning by play environment.

By supporting a sense of adventure the children will learn about the development of the Port by climbing, touching, smelling and playing.

This has been such an amazing experience to design. It enabled us to step into our inner child and develop a concept, which pushes design boundaries.

This year Museums Australia and Interpretation Australia held a joint national conference at the new State Theatre Centre.

As part of the conference, Creative Spaces were involved in the design of the event logo, promotional material and signage. We also designed and installed our own unique trade show stand.

Not satisfied with the standard ‘shell scheme’ package, Amy and Brittney took the trade stand to a new, interactive level. The Interactive Wall design was inspired by the concept of re-purposing everyday items and materials into walls and furniture.

2000 project cards, 1400 sweets and 700 customised pencils were placed into hundreds of small boxes to then be placed into our ‘rent-a-fence’. The installation became a great conversation starter as we met conference goers throughout the week. Although a few were hesitant, once they realised it was all part of the ‘grand design’, they all left smiling with a box in hand.

Creative Spaces also took on the task of dressing the Heath Ledger Theatre stage. Warwick Fabrics generously donated some of their beautiful fabrics, chosen to compliment the conference logo. We sculpted the fabric around props to create an industrial style set whilst showcasing the colours in a textured flowing form.

In the build up to the recent 175th anniversary of Houghton Wines, a weekend of family fun was planned.

The beautiful spring day was full of entertainment and sights to see. Creative Spaces (in conjunction with Savagely Creative) was asked to design a semi-permanent trail that leads people around the site and find out more about this piece of West Australian history.

The design was inspired by the royal blue ribbon seen on the White Classic bottles. By using the trees as the base for the signs, the flexible nature of the material created a different and interesting form at the each location. Accompanied by a map, this trail will be up for you to find over the summer.
