Built in 1871, Lomas Cottage sits within the colonial settlement on Wadjemup. The Rottnest Island Authority engaged Creative Spaces to revitalise the cottage as a small museum designed specifically for children up to 14 years of age, a group previously underrepresented in the island’s heritage experiences.
The vision was to create an inviting and imaginative space that could be used for play, rest and discovery. Located near key amenities, the cottage was well positioned to support families and carers as part of their visit.
Creative Spaces designed the full experience, including a custom playhouse structure, interactive elements, graphics, lighting and furniture. The design encourages exploration and hands-on learning while remaining respectful of the heritage setting.
The renewed cottage now offers a playful and meaningful introduction to Wadjemup’s history for younger audiences. It complements the island’s broader heritage offer and supports inclusive visitor experiences for families such as Wadjemup Museum and Pilot Boathouse, which were also completed by Creative Spaces.
