The redevelopment of the State Timber Museum was shaped by strong community interest and deep local connection to the timber industry in Western Australia’s South West. Creative Spaces worked as part of a broader project team, led by Suzanne Hunt Architect, following extensive community consultation.
The exhibition was designed to be robust, low maintenance and suitable for an unsupervised environment. A restrained material palette creates contrast with the building fabric while supporting clarity, legibility and accessibility, including dementia-friendly design principles.
Interpretation explores the timber industry’s role in shaping the Western Australian economy, with a strong focus on Aboriginal knowledge and natural resource management. Stories are layered through objects, graphics, tactile elements and immersive experiences.
The architectural form of the building informed the exhibition design. Tall vertical panels echo timber slats and forest growth, while lower horizontal elements reference milling and processing.
The museum offers a clear, engaging and inclusive visitor experience that connects people to industry, place and environment.
