The Wadjemup Museum is housed in the Old Mill and Hay Store on Wadjemup. The Rottnest Island Authority engaged Creative Spaces to refurbish the existing museum and update its storytelling approach, with a particular focus on engaging younger audiences and reflecting contemporary museum practice.
Creative Spaces led the project in collaboration with a multidisciplinary consultant team. The scope included new exhibition furniture, exterior signage, a welcoming reception desk, immersive multimedia interactives, a theatrette, exhibition graphics and a dedicated Discovery Centre. Each element was designed to strengthen visitor connection to the island’s cultural and environmental stories.
Structural changes were also introduced to improve how visitors move through and engage with the site. The entrance was relocated to better connect with surrounding foot traffic, unused decking was transformed into an events and seating area, and tiered outdoor seating was added to support learning programs.
The refurbished museum offers a more engaging, accessible and flexible visitor experience. It supports a deeper understanding of Wadjemup’s stories while aligning the museum with contemporary expectations.
