Creative Spaces was engaged to design a welcome sign for the City of Fremantle’s new civic centre at Walyalup Koort.
The sign needed to acknowledge the significance of Walyalup and recognise the enduring presence and contribution
of the Whadjuk Noongar people. (Walyalup is the Noongar name for an area that includes Fremantle and koort means heart.)
The design centres on a map of the Walyalup area, showing changes in shoreline contours from pre-colonial times to the present. Watercolour illustrations suggest how the landscape may have appeared prior to colonisation, helping visitors understand the deep relationship between land and water.
Materials were carefully selected to complement the civic centre’s interior architecture by Kerry Hill Architects.
Blackbutt timber and brass cut lettering provide a restrained and respectful finish that aligns with the surrounding space.
The completed sign offers a clear and meaningful welcome. It embeds cultural recognition into the everyday experience
of entering the civic centre, supporting awareness and understanding of place.
