Celebrating 60 Years: Channel 9 Perth

Content Development, Exhibition Design, Multimedia, Project Management, Temporary Exhibition

To mark 60 years of broadcasting in Western Australia, Nine Perth partnered with the WA Museum Boola Bardip to present a free public exhibition in the museum’s prominent Beaufort Link gallery. With high pedestrian traffic, the space offered a unique opportunity to celebrate the broadcaster’s legacy in a way that was both accessible and impactful.

Creative Spaces was engaged to curate and design an immersive exhibition experience that honoured Nine Perth’s cultural contribution while activating the space with strong visual storytelling. Working closely with the museum’s exhibition team and Nine Perth’s in-house graphic designers, we developed a cohesive narrative that highlighted six decades of innovation and community connection. As part of the process, Creative Spaces also supported the editing of written content for the exhibition panels to ensure clarity, consistency, and tone of voice across the experience.

Key milestones in Nine Perth’s story were brought to life through large-scale wall graphics, custom-designed interpretive panels, and a curated selection of broadcast artefacts. These included the original Stump Cam, vintage cameras, satellite dishes, tape machines and reels—many of which had featured in the broadcaster’s 50th anniversary display and were given new relevance through the updated design.

Digital storytelling added depth to the visitor experience. Monitors featured archival news segments, historic footage, and iconic television moments. A vintage television set looped a montage of channel intros, offering a nostalgic window into the visual identity of Nine over the years.

Environmental design elements such as floor graphics, branded seat covers and coordinated lighting helped unify the exhibition and enhance the sense of occasion. The experience extended beyond the gallery with a striking projection designed by motion designer, Rachel Wong, which illuminated adjacent heritage buildings with still and moving imagery. Visible through the gallery’s glass frontage during evening events, this activation served as a dramatic public-facing moment within the broader anniversary campaign. A printed souvenir booklet was also developed as a takeaway item, providing a keepsake for visitors to reflect on the station’s legacy.

This exhibition was more than a look back—it was a celebration of the stories, people and innovations that have shaped Nine Perth over six decades. Creative Spaces helped transform a transitional public area into a vibrant cultural touchpoint, offering a powerful example of how exhibition design can amplify heritage within contemporary spaces.
