The Wadjemup Museum is housed in the beautiful Old Mill & Hay Store on Rottnest Island. The Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) engaged Creative Spaces to update the existing displays in order to attract a younger audience, and keep up-to-date with modern museum methods of storytelling.

Creative Spaces designed and managed the refurbishment of the Museum in conjunction with a team of skilled consultants. New display furniture, exterior signage, a reception desk, multimedia interactives, theatrette, exhibition graphics and a Discovery Centre were designed to enhance visitor experiences and engage them with the outstanding cultural and environmental features of the Island.

In addition, the entrance was relocated to invite in local foot traffic, unused decking was activated as a new events and casual seating space, and tiered seating was added for outdoor learning programs.

The Wadjemup Museum Refurbishment project has been made possible by the National Tourism Icons Program, a partnership between the State and Federal Governments. It is part of infrastructure upgrades across the Island, which will continue to make Rottnest a great place to experience.

This project was completed in December 2020.

Creative Spaces also designed a VR space for the Power Up Electricity Museum.

Strawberry Hill/Barmup is a multi layered site of national heritage significance.

Located near Mt Clarence (Corndarup) and Mt Adelaide (Irrerup), with fresh water and close to the ocean, Barmup (Strawberry Hill) is understood to have been used for special meetings, celebrations and negotiations. Strawberry Hill became WA’s first farm in 1827 and was used by the Government to produce food for soldiers and convicts. It was the first building to be acquired by the National Trust of WA in 1964 and is State Heritage-listed.

Creative Spaces were contracted for stage one of the project which included outdoor signage, new displays, and exhibition furniture for the Main House and Visitor Hub. The new interpretation has transformed the visitor experience at Strawberry Hill/Barmup, enabling visitors to better understand the heritage significance and values of the place.

Consultation with Traditional Owners identified the need to replant native vegetation on the site and for the flora to be incorporated throughout the design. Working with the Traditional Owner’s wishes and a new branding guide for the site, these elements were woven through the graphics to create a cohesive look and feel for the property.

This project was completed in December 2020.

–

Creative Spaces also designed interpretation for the Kalbarri Skywalk.

Gosnells Golden Days is a series of short videos that were created during the pandemic as a way of virtually engaging the public with historical content while museums were unable to open. Using content in the City of Gosnells Collection, Creative Spaces worked with reknowned author and Perthonality, Richard Offen, to create short and engaging stories about Gosnells’ Golden Days. The stories have been published and shared via social media and YouTube.

Episode 1, ‘The Royals of Gosnells’, explores the history of Gosnells’ pioneering families and their significant contribution to the produce and agriculture side of the community.

Episode 2, ‘Halftime Heroes’, dives deep into the history of community sport in Gosnells. In particular, the essential behind the scenes work required for community sport to thrive.

The magnificent Kalbarri Skywalk (Kaju Yatka) is an iconic Western Australian tourism project that Creative Spaces were involved with from the outset. We were fortunate enough to visit the site with the families on the Nanda Advisory Group to hear their stories associated with Kalbarri before work commenced. We also met with the group and the Department of Parks and Wildlife staff regularly throughout the three year project to develop the interpretation.

The result is beautifully designed interpretation that took inspiration from the iconic Murchison River and incorporates artwork and illustrations from selected Nanda artists. The weathered steel beams form the centrepiece to the interpretive experience at the Skywalk and this look and feel carried through to other elements. We also designed the dual-language logo for the experience, the orientation structure, and multimedia elements.

This project was completed in February 2020.

The Betty Brown Historical Centre is a celebration of the contribution of women to the development of rural communities, and in particular the Shire of West Arthur. Creative Spaces were engaged during the initial assessment of the Betty Brown historical collection and collaborated with the Shire of West Arthur to develop themes, floorplans and graphics for the space.

Thematic areas are anchored by a dynamic display of interpretation, striking silhouettes and historical objects. Displays and central walls are fitted with hidden castors to allow maximum flexibility within the space. Where possible, exhibition furniture included integrated storage to provide much needed space for the expanding collection.

The palette for the centre drew inspiration from the rural environment, soft hues reflect the skies and fields during different seasons, whilst the neutral materials complemented the heritage building. The subtle inclusion of lace patterns provides a feminine touch and honours the late Betty Brown, the inspiration and generous benefactor of the Historical Centre.

The centre was unveiled on International Women’s Day 2020.

The 10ha Park, set in significant native bush and parklands, is home to many community events, celebrations and activities. A feature of the Park is the Historic Hamlet Interpretive Exhibitions, home to a number of original and replica buildings that aim to stimulate a historic settlement in the region.

In 2018, two new Historic Hamlet interpretive exhibitions were commissioned for the site, an Agricultural Shed and Blacksmith’s Shop. Creative Spaces worked closely with the Shire and the local Historical Society to create engaging and interactive spaces. A number of different interactive experiences can be found across the two new hamlets, including sound, tactile interpretation and back-lit displays.

This project was completed in December 2019.

The Power Up Electricity Museum explores the development of the electricity network in West Australia’s history through the former World of Energy collection, balanced against a lighter future of renewable energy and innovation. The exhibition design provides an engaging experience, which plays with the concept of ‘lightening the load’ through volume, colour and materials.

Creative Spaces was responsible for the full exhibition delivery with administrative, management and procurement support from the Shire of Manjimup.

With the story of the timber industry at the heart of almost every resident in the South West of Western Australia, the redevelopment of the dilapidated State Timber Museum held high expectations from the community. Based on the outcomes of workshops with community members the project team, led by Suzanne Hunt Architect, designed an exhibition that reflected the timber story both in the content and the overall look and feel of the spaces.

Designed to be robust and low maintenance, the State Timber Museum functions as an unsupervised space. A limited material palette for the exhibition creates contrast and highlights the design and finish of the building. An emphasis on clarity, legibility and accessibility aids in creating a dementia-friendly space. Visitors to the museum became aware of the how pivotal the timber industry was to the establishment of the Western Australian economy. Focus was placed on local Aboriginal knowledge, and the management of natural resources as a local and worldwide issue. The stories featured within the museum are layered with social and historical content, tactility and immersivity.

The architectural form of the building played an integral part in the design of the exhibition. Tall, slender exhibition panels echoed the verticality of the existing timber slats and accentuated the contours of the building. The shape and formation of the panels represent forest growth. The wider towering panels symbolise older timber, while the shorter panels are reminiscent of new growth forest. Low-level horizontal panels symbolise the cutting and milling process.

The project has received local, national and international visitors since opening in July 2018.

–

Winner, MAGNA Awards (Museums And Galleries National Awards), 2019.

The Murchison GeoRegion is a unique and picturesque region located in outback Western Australia. The proposed self-drive trail will take tourists through a number of ancient sites and landmarks in the region. Creative Spaces designed earthy, organic branding that reflects the iconic landscape of the region, with the brand mark being an abstract interpretation of the ancient lands and brilliant skies – a trademark of the Murchison. The deliverables included branding, brand style guide, complete with interpretive signage design, a trail guide booklet and brand merchandise. We also managed the development of the Murchison GeoRegion app and website which was completed by Specialist Apps.

The Murchison GeoRegion is Australia’s first major geotourism development. The region is a unique part of the country and should be on everybody’s travel bucket list.

This project was completed in October 2019.

Creative Spaces also worked on the Manjimup Parks Sign Style Guide, another project including signage design.

Situated at the heart of St Mary’s Cathedral, the interpretation centres around the rich cultural heritage of the site, the development of the catholic faith in Perth and the community, both past and present. With content to suit all ages, the accompanying exhibition aims to engage the wider metropolitan, regional and international communities with a vibrant and contemporary display of objects from the church’s collection and a fabulous collection of archival imagery.

Additional educational resources and fact sheets were developed as an extension of the St Mary’s Cathedral interpretation are available on site.

This project was completed in August 2019.

Creative Spaces designed the Wilkinson Homestead Interpretation, another interpretive project.

In 2017, Tourism WA approached Creative Spaces with the desire to develop a series of trail brochures focused on food & wine experiences in Western Australia.

The trails were part of the agency’s Food and Wine strategy to strengthen the reputation of WA as a destination with gourmet produce and premium beverages of international recognition. Each trail was listed on the Trails WA website and smart phone app.

Take a trip to any one of the 30+ West Australian destinations and you’ll find our trail brochures with handy maps and top local destinations to visit. Eat and drink your way around WA with us and explore what our wonderful state has to offer.

This project was completed in July 2019.
