Walyalup Civic Centre Welcome Sign

Graphic Design, Interpretive Design

In November 2021, the City of Fremantle relocated their offices to a brand new building in Walyalup Koort (formerly Kings Square). Walyalup is the Noongar name for an area that includes Fremantle and Koort means heart.

Creative Spaces were engaged to design a welcome sign for the new civic centre that reflects the history of the Whadjuk Noongar people and their contribution to the land.

Depicted in the sign is a map of the Walyalup area showing changes in the shoreline contour from pre-colonial times to today. A collection of watercolour images are included to demonstrate how the landscape may have looked prior to colonisation.

The sign features a handful of carefully selected substrates, including blackbutt timber and brass cut lettering, which were chosen to compliment the beautiful interiors designed by Kerry Hill Architects.

Creative Spaces also designed the interpretation at the Heirloom Apartments in Fremantle.
